10 of My Favorite Travel Quotations

I believe the most used travel quotation is Lao Tzu’s “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

That single step I did 55 days ago- on the morning of February 1, 2012, I left the comforts of my home in Los Banos, Laguna and started my 1oo days of journey around the Philippines.

Because I want to save on expenses, I walk miles and miles of road because I believe that “You see places in a different perspective when you slow down and walk.”

They say that walking is a good form of exercise. I’m a runner and walking is considered a cross-training coz you develop other sets of muscles not used while running. Its one of the glorious feat a baby can do. Every parent would burst into joy when they see their child begin to walk.

Its also a metaphor for life, travel and even exploration. Its so basic in for the love of outdoors- its called hike when done in the mountains, trek when done on rough roads.

In ISANG DAAN Journey, I have walk a lot of roads, beachlines, caves, mountains and almost every place that can be walked.

Walking along Buscalan Rice Terraces, Tinglayan, Kalinga after planting rice

Touring a place by walking is like saying to yourself to take it slow, to observe, to feel the ground and listen to the sound of the surroundings.

So today, I prepared a short walking video of the places where I visited during Days 8-20 of my 100 Days of Backpacking the Philippines. Hope you like it!

But wait, to make it more interesting, I added 11 of my fave travel quotations that will surely inspire the wanderlust in you.

Sit back, listen and join me as I walk Northern Luzon.

Now, may I know your fave quotation during the 1:57mins of the vid?

You might also add your fave travel quotation…

___ ___ ___

#ISANGDAAN is a personal journey and challenge to backpack around the Philippines the cheapest way possible for 100 days. “Isang Daan” is a Filipino term that can mean either “one way” or “one hundred.”

I agree. Walking is one of the best ways to explore a new place. I’m able to familiarize myself more with the place if I explore it on foot. Tipid pa. Gusto ko yung quote na a traveler is he who goes on foot and then sits down a lot. Saktong sakto kasi pagkatapos mo nga naman magpagod kakalakad, uupo ka rin ng madalas. 😛

haha! oo nga, minsan a traveler is someone who sits a lot because he is soo tired (or maybe lazy) of walking. hahaha

What a great video. Totally captures the healing and soothing rhythm of walking, and the change of your pace (slow trod on mud, for instance) illustrates a traveler’s flexibility and adaptability. I loved all the quotes in this video, but let me add one favorite:

“. . .the grand tour is just the inspired man’s way of heading home.”
    – Paul Theroux

I’ve got two quotes to add to your list:

“There’s a book that tells you where you should go on your vacation. It’s called your checkbook.”

    and

The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see. ~G.K. Chesterton

After watching that video the only question I have in my mind is, “what shoes are you wearing?” You should get sponsorship from them 🙂 Parang very comfortable talaga (not the tsinelas).

My favorite quote in your video: And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed.

But I would add the final line to that quote by Pico Iyer: “That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.”

One good quote u can add: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller. Fell in love with this quote the first time I came across it. It speaks a lot what traveling really is, I think.

Great video. For me the best quote was the one from Mohammed: “Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled”. Travelling teaches you stuff that you’ll never learn in school. Hope to travel with you soon!
