5 Things to Do in Adelaide

Australia calls… know I ask, “What to do ‘Down Under’?”

Maybe I should start in Adelaide?

Adelaide, Australia is due west of Sydney, and located along the south-western coast of the continent-country. With a greater metropolitan area population of just over one million people, Adelaide enjoys the status as “the most livable city in Australia”. Should your travels take you to the city, there are many great activities and sights to see and do. While it is hard to qualify what are the best, there are a few that stand out.

Ride a Free Bike

Like Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Adelaide offers free bicycles for use throughout the city. Gran a free bike for use at Cannon Backpackers on Franklin Street. Head out through the city and enjoy the side bike lanes, tree lined streets and sidewalk cafes. Ready to get off the bike? Find one of the dedicated bike stands, and simply drop the bike off and make your way on foot.

The Toy Factory

Kids young and old alike simply cannot miss the chance to see the world’s largest rocking horse, among many other giant and normal size toys. Head out to the Adelaide Hills to The Toy Factory. The Toy Factory has Australia’s largest collection of wooden toys and blocks, many of them in play areas where little hands can create worlds and enjoy the toys. If you want to cli,b up the nearly 50 feet high Rocking Horse, pay your modest entry fee and head on up. Enjoy the view from the top of the giant toy horse.

Glenelg Tram

If you want to see the harbor, beaches and city, take the time to ride the Glenelg Tram. This tram runs day and night, and goes across Victoria Harbor and traverses the beaches. Sit by the window and relax after a day of exploring on foot. The tram is modestly priced, making it a great family activity that gets you out into the city for a manageable fee. The tram is free for all downtown locations, offered for free to minimize traffic and parking congestion.

Adelaide Zoo

Australia is home to some of the most unique animals in the world; many of these are found only in Australia. It is hard to see much of the flora and fauna in the wilds, making a trip to the Adelaide Zoo and education in Aussie wildlife without having to risk life and limb. Beyond the indigenous wildlife on display at the zoo, the Adelaide Zoo is one of the only in the world that has China Panda’s in displays. This makes the trip worth every minute with the zoo being located within a convenient proximity to some cheap Adelaide hotels.

Walk the North Terrace

The North Terrace is a mile long esplanade with shops, cafes, restaurants and a casino. Locals stroll, shop and enjoy ice cream and street performers on weekends. This is the place to see and be seen. Go early in the morning and stop off for a coffee at a sidewalk cafe, then stroll the shops. In the afternoon have a full lunch and top the day off with a trip for some gaming at the North Terrace Casino.
