No To Mining in Palawan- A Petition Letter

My dear friends,

On January 24 a very dear friend and colleague Gerry Ortega was shot in the head dead. I was just with him that weekend – and a few minutes before he died what we were discussing over the phone was an anti-mining campaign in Palawan – given that on December two huge mining applications were railroaded – and they were to be near protected sites.

Gerry is dead but we will not let go of his dreams – and mine – and probably yours too.

Palawan has 17 key biodiversity sites – which means it is part of the 70% biodiversity sites which are essential for sustaining life in the planet. It has 2 world heritage sites, 8 protected sites. Yet if you see Palawan on the map you will note that it is a very thin island – which is 82% mountain. It means that if the forest gets denuded and the minerals excavated – the tailings seep directly into the sea affecting the coral reefs. The top soil is thin – and the island eco system is fragile.

Mining is not the way to go for Palawan . I have five eco tourism sites wherein the communities involved can now send their children to school, can dream bigger dreams. Mayor Hagedorn in Puerto Princesa has banned mining and logging – and focused on tourism and agriculture. From 2 flights a week, Puerto Princesa now boasts 10 flights a day. His revenues have gone up from several million to several billion.
Mining as an economic path in a magnificent “Last Frontier” is based on a paradigm of economic growth that is myopic and archaic . In this age of climate change and global warming any economic development that does not recognize and revere the web of life should be thrown in the dustbin.

Please please support the ten million signature campaign to Stop Mining in Palawan . The richness of Palawan is the wealth and pride of the country, it is the wealth of the world. Log in to www.no2mininginpalawan.com .. register your vote and please please send it to thousands others. You can also include your household by downloading the form printing it – and faxing it t 4152227 or you can scan it and send it to signatures@no2mininginpalawan.com. to all who are supporting no to mining:

stand up for what you believe is right. DO NOT patronize the products of the mining industry.

DO NOT wear clothes or anything that used needles to sew / make it. Go naked or wear leaves and vines.

DO NOT use electricity or anything that run with the aid of electricity. Wires are mostly made of copper which are mined and produced here in the Philippines too. Electronic devices are obviously a big part of the mining industry.

Everything you have in you and around you are because of the mining industry.

I am aware of the effects of mining that is why people like us are practicing and advocating responsible mining for sustainable development.

We (the technical persons) will stand on what we believe is right.

DO YOUR PART. Stand up to what you believe. DO NOT PATRONIZE ANY (any, any, any) PRODUCTS OF THE MINING INDUSTRY. (tingnan natin kung kaya ninyo)

as if naman kasi hindi kayo nakikinabang.

We are now importing rice from Thailand and other countries because we no longer could produce enough rice to feed the Filipino citizens, want to know why? because the once productive rice plantations and healthy soils are now harmful. Those soils are now full of laterite. Rice crops and other plants doesn’t grow on laterite soils. Now, if you could survive without any food then fine, support mining here in the Philippines. And I’d like to point out that Ms. Gina Lopez is not against ALL MINING. She is just against mining HERE in the Philippines. Philippines is not made for mining. Go mine elsewhere, not here in the Philippines.

HINDI AKO AGAINST SA MINING BASTA WAG LANG SA PALAWAN!

I’m not against mining but NOT IN PALAWAN. You are so stupid if you want to live like those in the stone age. Palawan has greater potential in eco-tourism due to its magnificent beauty. Though it has a lot of minerals but it’s unjust to dig out those minerals and disregard the rich natural resources and ecosystem of our province. MINING is NOT SUSTAINABLE, it is only temporary may be just for a couple of decades.

You are too selfish kung yes to mining ka in Palawan at malamang dayuhan ka lang sa probinsya namin. You want to exacavate the Philippine’s Last Frontier? Oh come on you are really selfish!

        yes to mining??????

What is happening in Palawan and all over the Philippines (lalo na sa Benguet na minimina na since 1908) is that a huge area ay ina-aaplyan ng mining applications from large foreign companies. Now sino ba ang pinapatamaan pag sinabing foreign mining companies?
Eh saan nga ba kasi napupunta yung minimina nila?
Ang kasinungalingan ng “There is Life in Mining”
Do you know that one a mining application is granted, the company will mine the land for 25 years, at RENEWABLE pa ito for another 50 years! Imagine! 75 years of mining! Ano na lang ang matitira sa lupa? At remember, LAHAT NG KUMPANYA NG MINA GUGUSTUHING KUMITA NG PINAKAMALAKING PROFIT! Imagine 75 years of mining?
Ibig sabihin if may sapa jan, or river, free to use yan ng company. For 75 years.
There was once an old man from the community who brought a water sample galing sa Abra river, isang river na affected ng Lepanto Mines sa Benguet (Yes, kase connected ang river systems dito). A group of scientists tested the water and they found high levels of cyanide, and other toxic chemicals sa tubig. Now are they saying sa media? That these foreign companies are responsible miners?
I went to Itogon, Benguet and I saw the area of “dwarf trees”. All’s left was burak, lason, buhangin and tunnels.
Even the schools ay lumubog na! Sa Mankayan Benguet nga ilang school buildings na yung di ginagamit kasi lumulubog sila.
Me Trabahong di Marangal sa Mining
250/day? 300/day?
REHABILITATION: Hello, mahal kaya mag-rehabilitate? Imagine after 75 years mong miminahin isasalba mo ulet?
Mining Act of 1995, even the DENR ay ganito ang sinasabi.

Even the schools ay lumubog na! Sa Mankayan Benguet nga ilang school buildings na yung di ginagamit kasi lumulubog sila.
Me Trabahong di Marangal sa Mining
250/day? 300/day?
REHABILITATION: Hello, mahal kaya mag-rehabilitate? Imagine after 75 years mong miminahin isasalba mo ulet?
Mining Act of 1995, even the DENR ay ganito ang sinasabi.

We are not against mining. We are against mining HERE in PALAWAN and in the PHILIPPINES. Do your mining elsewhere like in Chile or in Australia but NOT here. Philippines is an agricultural country not an industrial country.

I heard Ms. Gina Lopez’s statement in ABC News just this afternoon. She said that Bataraza is the poorest municipality in the province. Do you have any evidence for that? When you think so, maybe that’s because of those people who are abusing their powers (kahit san naman merong currupt). Wag tayong 1 sided. The reality is that, you can’t give source of living to those who are depending in the companies. LET’S SAY NO TO ILLEGAL MINING… but not all the minings here in Southern part of Palawan are illegal. If we are violating the rule of law, then why did the RP president had visited our Barangay? And why are we living peacefully and harmoniously as a local resident of this place? In the end, I could say that is easier to point your fingers to someone than looking at the real victim/s.

thanks jirah… i believe as you do that not all mining companies are illegal but being a “legal” mining company doesn’t assure anyone that nature are not being affected, worst destroyed.

im quoting my good friend who goes to palawan monthy

“the south is just quiet but behind are tribes, native land & rich water resources that are being destroyed. they have been fighting for this and even got threats…signing this is one way we can fight the biggies….fyi rio tuba is destroyed… 🙁 “

you should come here in Rio Tuba, then prove it to yourself,,,

we’re not destroyed,,, in fact we’re developed. I’ve gone to mining site since I was a kid,,, the companies here shows their interest allowing Rio Tuba citizen to know what was happening on their environment,, and they also allowed us to ask questions.. maybe they will allow you too… before we’re like you.. AYAW DIN NMN S MINING DATI… but then we’re still here… cause we’ve seen in our own eyes how responsible mining Rio Tuba has,,, if you ask how? then you should come here to have enough knowledge about it… people doesn’t only come here because of work, because of money, because of wealth, but because they want to survive… how can another generation survive if our generation today doesn’t even try to survive?… I’ve gone also to those tribes that you’ve been talking.,, hey guest what.. the companies protected them and even provided their needs, and they knew that mining isn’t bad at all.. that mining is much more safer than burning mountains to have their “kaingins”..
your friend goes here monthly.. why don’t ask us who lives in here? And guest what not only citizens of Rio Tuba benefited the minings here, but even our province, and even our country…
And even anti- minings before benefited it also…what a shame…
our parents works at mining since our birth, thats how we survive, mining assures them better future for us. and it all came true… I’ve been to a good college, and some of my batch mates are now have a good professions and it is because of mining… and i believe that our next generations will have to…

I am a resident of Palawan but working here in Manila. Mining itself is not bad, its the attitude and motives of the people. Minerals are also created by God to be extracted and to be of use pero not to the extent of destroying the things that He also created. Its hard to weigh things kung sino ang tama at sino ang mali. Taga-palawan ka man o turista everyone has its own opinion. Siguro what we need is regulation ng mining sa Palawan not a total ban.

Reflect on it… saan ba tlga nag ugat ang lahat ng destructions. Its from us tayo mismo na taga Palawan. We blame it to the government officials to our leaders who allowed mining sa Palawan pero di ba natin naisip sino ba ang naglagay sa pwesto sa mga Government Officials na yun di ba tayo rin. We cant point fingers to anyone kasi sa bawat pagturo natin isa ang nakaturo sa iba pero apat na daliri natin nakaturo sa sarili natin.

Lets All advocate for a Responsible Mining in Palawan. We dont have to fully stop the operations right away but to regulate it and be responsible.

to all who are supporting no to mining:

stand up for what you believe is right.

Well, you are entitled to your own opinion.

Mining can be done in other places but not here in Palawan.

Nakakalungkot.

yes, I agree with you journeyingjames because I have stayed in the southern part of Palawan for almost a year and I had witness that the mountain was frequently visited by illegal loggers and researchers (studying the possibility of mining the place)… the natives were being fooled by those greedy people…

this is a claim from people who don’t know a thing about mining and its effects to the society and the environment. True, mining may cause damages and hazards to the surrounding but EVERY industry has this potential effects. That is why, the engineers of this country are trying every possible to way to maintain and follow what the government’s laws about environment preservation. If you say that mining should stop as soon as possible, better practice yourself and teach your “next generation” how to live like a cave man cause that’s what will happen. Guess what? Everything you use comes from the mining industry. Please help yourself and read more about what you say so you won’t appear like an idiot.

A thirty years of responsible mining is enough to prove that there were no accident and destruction happened as I am opposing to a two times visit of every individual who are supporting to a NO MINING IN PALAWAN campaign. If there were such a case did you heard in the news that people in Rio Tuba died because of toxic bullshit spill? They were always insisting, “I visited Rio Tuba twice”, “i was in Rio Tuba for a vacation for 3 days”, “my friend visited Rio Tuba and he told me it was totally destroyed”, this is bullshit they know it and everyone and each of us from Rio tuba knows it, you must give Rio Tuba a long time visit to make her you feel how she love her population. You people who insist you love nature, who doesn’t love nature?, those people who throws thousands of tons of garbage in Metro Manila and suburbs everyday!, those who cuts trees and make logs for their own interests. You, advocates go to Northern Luzon look for the Illegal Loggers, that causes a killer floods you’ll find some for sure if you really love mother nature, and make a petition, don’t disturb Rio Tuba Nickel Mining we didn’t kill anybody, we didn’t harm them. Rio Tuba cuts 20 trees but she plant 100 more, build houses for the mountain people, invite them to join in the market. If you really want to try how destructive this mining is, try to work there and you will find nothing but to live in peace. If you want to make report to the public, try to adapt Rio Tuba, mingle with the people talk to the ageds the chieftains and the kids, then go make your Krusadas.

Didn’t you know that in our everyday life the products of mining are involved? It’s on our body, in our house, in our gadgets and even in the kitchen, they’re nickel and metal, a spoon we used for feeding ourselves and our children, a button in your clothes, your watches, look around!

Look at the government, inside are the most dangerous and destructive creation! The corrupt officials!

      Choose a Mining to stop!!!

At the end of the day it is the lives of the people of Palawan and the breathtaking environment that should always be preserved. Palawan is our country’s last environmental frontier – we must protect it at all cost!

I love nature and I’m pro mining… why you so against mining any way… If you can’t look at that side, then try to look on the other side… before saying anything else, u needed enough knowledge about it… Life is a matter of survival, then nature will survive itself…
      And so people must survive…

fact,we need nature that’s why we also need to take care of it. we also have to consider those people in palawan who dont depend in the fruit of mining. we may not be from palawan but palawan is stil a part of philippines so as a concern citizen we have a right to express our own idea about what’s happening in palawan. what you called responsible mining shouldnt have killed people like DOC GERRY ORTEGA. We are part of nature, we need to survive like them…that’s how nature survive..you can’t survive by your own. you need something and some one to depend on..that’s why we depend on natures, and they depends on us..if we die, they will die.. and vice versa.. to know that thing you should come here and leave with us so that you will understand…

TAKE NOTE THE WORD “KABABAYAN” IT MEANS SARILI MONG LAHI. ganto na lang magbibigay ako ng sitwasyon ilagay mo sarili mo sa sitwasyon na yun then ANALYZE ,and PLS OPEN UP YOUR MIND

BE CONSIDERATE WITH OTHERS

WALANG NAGSABI NA BAWAL MAGMINA SA BUONG MUNDO,kung matalino ka maiintindihan mong sa mga lugar lang na may key biodiversity like PALAWAN at dahil sabi mo nga marami akong alam that’s why im all for no to mining in palawan and other key bio diversity areas at hindi NO TO MINING,period. 😉

at isa pa jayden ang gulo mo kausap,SABI KO MANANATILI ANG NATURE KAHIT WALA TAYO LALO NA KUNG HINDI SISIRAIN. if people will leave the nature alone my gosh, patay ka na buhay pa yan..

mr. harold, you are very much misinformed and what you are saying has no basis. first of all, mining is, and has been operating in palawan for so many years now. the fact that you could use the internet means that you are very benefiting from the products of mining. throw your computer, throw everything made of metal that you have. but then again, i think everything that you have right now is a product of mining, may it be direct or indirectly. i also haven’t been to palawan and i am in the mining industry. please be knowledgeable about responsible mining before saying all those stuff.

Every thing in this world has a purpose and a plan.. And I do believe that Our creator created everything very good. Every thing…was very good… but we destroyed it.. we can’t point our fingers to any one, including mining companies because we think they are the one who causes Palawan forest destroyed, we also did it..
if we want to make a difference it should start to ourselves.
But we can’t change it… it is because we’re different from each other, diff. in principle, idea, and character. That’s why we live in diff. community and environment.. see, I don’t need to become like you to understand what you wanted me to understand. Because I already knew it.. The only thing that I think I did is accepting the truth that I live in a place that really needed a mining to be develop, and mining will save our starving and dying community..
Have you realized it? I should be the one supporting this petition cuz I’m living here in Palawan, but I didn’t because I know which to side to stand. And I knew the truth. not because I’m short-sighted and narrow minded, but because I’m living in reality…

James. May point si Citizen105. If mining activity or business is approved, that means, in some areas, the site is suitable for mining talaga. Mining has a lot to do with our present lifestyle natin ngayon. yong mga gadgets natin sa IT.

So lahat nga activity that will destroy nature ay masama.

Ang hind lang maganda ay ang redtape diyan during the processing of permits from DENR.

With regards to your opinion, about scarcity of land. We have also a mining site here in Bukidnon, dun nga lang sa Mangima Site (are familiar with mangima stones?). Like in romblon, mga marbles naman ang nandun, may mga minerals din dun.

So, james. lets respect ones opinion.

JUST ACCEPT THE TRUTH, THAT WE WANT DEVELOPMENT NG COMFORTABLE LIFE, THAT MEANS GETTING UNREPLACABLE MINERALS FROM THE ENVIRONMENT..

Batari. In exchange of your opinion. I respect that. But lets consider the land use planning in a certain place. If that is belong to the urban site. Well, building talaga ang itatayo dyan. But our government right now are much aware of green environment. Like in Marikina City. They have a very comprehensive land use plan. They have areas that are restricted for building construction and preserved for green environment.

With regards to areas restricted for development, meron din ang mga LGU nyan, like areas preserved for production. Para na man sa food production yan.

Sa tingin ko, ito ay challenge ng mga LGU para ma control and urban development, that they should consider always the green environment. Kumbaga, they have to adopt the green architecture. New york nga, they are into GREEN ARCHITECTURE NA NGAYON. Please find it in the google. GREEN ARCHITECTURE, to give you some idea regarding new era of building construction because of our Global Problems on Food Production. How about that? Hope that I’ve enlightened and reinforced your discontentment about development.

please don’t be one sided with your opinions with regards to mining. as i googled this post, & read the other reports in no2mininginpalawan.com, i was really amazed na ung mga small scale miners pa ang me ganang magreklamo sa pagpasok ng mga large scale mining company. wow talaga, because in the first place, the large scale mining companies must strictly comply first with so many regulations set by the government before they can even move. while the small scale miners, wala silang sinusunod kung san nila tinatapon ang mga waste nila, at yun ang masama.

i’ve been to palawan & i also believe that its really a wonderful place, pero i doubt that mining in the south will post a very big problem on the whole province. i’ve many friends in rio tuba, & they’re doing fine.

please don’t be bias. if you really want to mining, then it should be worldwide, hinde specific na palawan lang. pero tignan natin kung pano tayo uusad. dahil lahat ng teknolohiyang hawak nio, at lahat ng pagkain na nilalamon nio, lahat yan eh dahil sa mina.

James, what a good life you have as a traveler. Maybe, you do not realize while you are aboard a plane, that its engine is made up of nickel alloys, and the airports and the buildings you come to, enter and leave are made of stainless steels that have nickel alloys in them.

You support the cause (No to Mining in Palawan 10M SIgnature campaign) without even studying and researching on the issue. Ms Gina Lopez’s letter is full of emotive but baseless assertions and mistaken facts and you did not bother to check. The NGOs based in Puerto princesa have found a frontline speaker in the person of Mr Ortega (the murdered broadcaster, Ms Lopez’ friend who is her main man in her Palawan projects). Yet they themselves hide the fact that mining exists even in Puerto Princesa. Why are these Puerto-based NGOs silent about mining within their confines is something worth inquiring into. (Said NGOs that Ms Lopez associates herslef with have been attacking our mine here since 1990s.) And Ms Lopez has to include in her letter that Pto Princesa is mining-free?!? Just shows that she is not really familiar of Palawan and that what she has are these NGO’s baseless words.

Rio Tuba is just one of the villages in Bataraza town. You go here and you’ll see that it is just a small fraction of the land being occupied by the mine. You go here and you will see how a responsible mine operates. The community is even involved in mined-out areas rehabilitation and reforestation.

Please check out the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development website for an accurate and credible info about the state of environment of Palawan.

Good luck on your travels. May you find relevance in each trip you make by fully understanding the places and the people you have been to. We expect highly of you.

Are you sure there is no good in mining? mining applications are different from mining permits. The whole Palawan will not be mined!!!! it is such that we are blessed with mineral reserves that we can mine out and rehabilitate with all the technically educated persons that we have (+ no corrupt government)! don’t just blame it to mining!

    To All,

Do you really know what mining is about? Do you even know that the same computer/laptop you are using is made possible because of mining? Your mobile phone, your DSLR, your car, your house construction materials.. if you are against mining then live the way people during the stone age.

I do not completely close my door on mining. C’mon let’s not see things in black and white. The problem is not the mining industry itself but how these companies do their work. Many of them will say they go for responsible mining, but how responsible can they be?

I can understand why the NGOs and concerned government officials pose this mining ban in Palawan. Mga kapatid, tourist destination ang Palawan. Walang mining company na hindi nanira ng kapaligiran- even to the smallest extent.

I know that we have biases. The key here is to know the context, understand the people, know the true meaning of responsibility and accountability. Know what the words “too much” means.

Journeying James, as a traveler you know that to fully grasp what a place is, you have to experience it. To know more about the people, you have to immerse yourselves in their day-to-day living. Schedule a trip in one of the mining communities of the country.

The man in the video is merely reasoning in circles and i wonder how could you easily be persuaded by such weak arguments.

What is needed is to strike a balance between environmental protection and developmental goals. Please read on the The Real Score by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development. The article is available and can be accessed @ http://www.pcsd.ph

and please PalaOne, i find it cowardice to comment using not your real name or email add. the pastor on the video might be reasoning in circles but then again he is bulwark and passionate, reveals his true identity compared to the “yes-to-mining-advocates” here.

Hindi naman siguro “all mountains in southern palawan” will bemined.
What’s next after mining? Mining as it operates not only provides jobs, income, it also arms the people with lifeskills and resources which the community can use once mining ceases.
To use or not to use one’s real name on the internet is a right of everyone. This is how it is on the world wide web. It;s not cowardice, traveler james, it is exercising a right to protect one’s personal details and have privacy. What matters is the substance of one’s assertions, not who asserts.

Lets all Pray for Palawan! God is in Control.

I’ve seen the documentary presented by Arnel Mercado in ABS-CBN’s KRUSADA. Let us all join hands to permanently stop the mining in Palawan!

I stayed in the southernmost part of Palawan for a year and I witnessed how the mountains of Palawan were destroyed by illegal loggers. There are researchers coming to the site to study the place for the possibility of mining. The natives were always fooled by these people (because a lot of them are uneducated). And they are usually displaced when the mining activity commence. I hope that those involved or pro mining will not only think of themselves but also of the innocent people of Palawan. The treasures of the Earth are not only for those who haves…for those who knows…for those who are powerful…but the treasures of the Earth are for all of us… Let us preserve them not only for our generation but also for the future generation…

Bakit ganito yung logic? Canada’s and Australia’s booming industries are the products of responsible mining.

It wasn’t yours in the first place. Ang mga nasa mining sector, niyu-utilize lang nila ang mga underground resources for everyone’s use and consumption din naman. They are required to replace all trees or resources na naapektuhan sa mining project.

      Madaling sabihin, mahirap gawin.

Ok then, exploit all our natural resources! But the very issue here is mining in Palawan! Protected areas are not supposed to be mined. Self-explanatory, right? You cut down a tree, and replace them with a hundred or so. But a tree doesn’t grow 5 meters overnight.

I believe these are also being discussed in YOUR UNIVERSITY.

I agree when you said that the Philippines is one of the richest in natural resources. But do we, Filipinos, benefit largely from it? The answer is very evident. NO! The foreigners do. They exploit our resources, and we get only a little portion from their profit.

You want responsible mining? Then go to Australia or Canada, NOT IN PALAWAN!

may point ka 2gud4You..bt ibahin mu ang sitwasyon mning mga taga rio tuba..hindi masama ang pagmimina… at hindi masama ang mina dito sa amin…sabi nga kung my n violate na rules ang company dito, then show some evidences. ei ang kaso paratang lang sila ng paratang ng walang katotohanan..sa totoo lang wala ka ngang pinag kaiba sa kanila, cuz ur jumping into a conclusion w/o knowing the problem… have you seen the mining site itself? then bakit mo sasabihing kalabisan at sobrang pag-aabuso sa kalikasan.. from the word ”site” it already explains that there is a certain area..so panu un matatawag na abuso.. and beside mining company here in rio tuba already existed for almost 30 years.. i do hope na binasa mu mga comment nila bago ka nagkoment and they already explained this matter earlier… and this petition is about ”no to mining in palawan” mas maganda sana kung ”no to irresponsible mining in palawan” bka suportahan pa nming taga mina.. dahil maging kming mga residente ng rio tuba palawan ay kasama ng sambayanang Pilipino sa pagbabantay ng kalikasan. at kung my nakita kming mali sa ginagawa nila kami ang unang aalma. dahil kami ang unang apektado.. bt we all know how responsible they are… high school palang ako inoorient na kami sa mga bagay na ito.. kaya hindi kami basta nadadala ng mga sabi sabi lng..

Our president was the first to initiate this campaign in our school. And he invited other schools to do the same.

actually im not agree with mining in palawan, kung mawawalan man ng trabaho ang karamihan ng tao sa Palawan, it is there way of finding an alternative jobs and not to blame the Government for their status. iniisip nila ang kanilang trabaho n mawawala, hindi nila naiisip na mas malaki ang mawawala sa kanila kung kalikasan nman ang mawawala. Reflect on this, wag sarili ang isipin, hindi lang mining ang kanuhayan na pwede nating gawin, marami dyan, hindi lang kayo naghahanap. 🙂

Mining in Rio Tuba and HPP’s operation will soon be over — that is, when all the mountains are gone. Yes it is true that the community benefits from these operations. What they do not realize is it’s long-term effect. Soon, this community will turn into a ghost town. And the foreign investors (Japanese) will simply run away and find another victim. Taganito, Surigao — you are next.

Just put it this way Miss Laguisma:

If in a day, the nickel processing plant feeds tons and tons of ore, what more if it continues its operation for ten more years? Million or billion tons! Equivalent to a mountain! Can’t you see? Mining operations are changing the landscapes. If you are going to allow exploitation of your natural resources to such an alarming rate, better start worrying now. Nature will take its toll.

Stop being greedy! Think of your children, of the next generations.

I pity these people who are very misinformed about mining. This website presents half-truths and some inevitable cons of mining, cons which every field of work has. Just like how a vegan keeps from using animal by-products, the anti-mining people should refrain from using mining products. Let’s see where that will get you. As a developing country, we need all these resources to move forward. Large-scale mining practices responsible mining–a thing which isn’t practiced by small-scale mining, which the government must look into. As we were taught in university, “If it can’t be grown, it must be mined.”

To those who say that trees are being cut, the large-scale mining companies are required to replenish these trees that they’ve cut. And to those who insist on thinking about the future generations, how about ourselves? Later on, won’t they also discover all these riches that the Philippines has and think of acquiring these minerals from the underground?

I believe that responsible mining is the solution. Utilizing these resources for the good of the country and its people and not of the foreign companies. This is what needs to be implemented in the mining sector, especially the small-scale mining sector. The DENR and the government must do its job to implement stricter rules regarding mining (where it is feasible to mine, what companies will mine). Whether you like it or not, everyone needs mining. It is a very important economic sector in the whole world.

I blame Gina Lopez for the misinformation and hypocrisy, the Catholic Church for the misplaced authority over most of its Christians who blindly follow them because it is the “moral” thing to do, (“Who’s to say what is “moral,” btw?) and the gullible Filipinos who believes what the media (and the Church) says and who doesn’t, at least once, try to be skeptical.

I agree with Spare Palawan when he/she commented (isogyre, I suggest you read and understand this):

“Ok then, exploit all our natural resources!

Then go to Australia or Canada, NOT IN PALAWAN!”

Why do people react on this issue? It’s actually not an issue of anti-mining per se. It’s about the desire to preserve and protect the island of Palawan against the destructive effects of mining.

Still can’t understand? Just put it this way, if you have a clean, well-organized bedroom, and one time a stranger gets into your room. This stranger turns your room into a party place and leaves all the mess in it. What would your reaction be?

It’s all about doing the right things at the right place.

binasa nyo ba yung Final Mine Rehabilitation And/Or Decommissioning Plan (FMRDP) and Final Mine Rehabilitation And Decommissioning Fund (FMRDF) Guidelines? Related yun sa EPEP/AEPEP which include, but shall not be limited to, exploration,
development, utilization, rehabilitation, regeneration, revegetation and reforestation of
mineralized areas, slope stabilization of mined-out areas, waste dumps (acid mine drainage
control), tailings-covered areas, aquaculture, watershed development and water conservation
        and socioeconomic development.

And about sa socioeconomic development, eto yung mga icoconsider:
        • Retrenchment Package as provided by law; and
        • Labor Support Policies and Programmes. A broad range of placement services designed to improve capacity of workers or “add value” to the human capital to help workers make the transition to alternative jobs or in becoming self-employed:
        • Job Search. Provision of information to mine workers on labor markets and job-openings;
        • Skills Training and Education Programme. Provision of job-related courses/trainings or courses focused toward a future career which may vary from office skills to artisan multi-skills training, computer technology, mechanical trades and similar vocations;
        • Enterprise Awareness. To sensitize and/or motivate those who consider self-employment but have not yet seen such as a viable alternative; and
        • Counseling. To help workers cope both socially and financially after the loss of their job and should be focused on money matters and property management.

Another issue that should be considered is the transfer of social assets and services. The mine usually own and operate a range of social assets, including housing and institutions of culture, sports and medical services. Housing includes residential houses, water supply, and electricity and telecommunication network, among others.

God gave us filipinos bountiful blessing. He gave us a very2 beautiful country full of natural resources where in we cant find anywherelse in this world.and palawan is very fortunate to have a lot of this blessings. i think this blessing are meant to last forever and not just for 30,40,50,60….years. and i also want my next generation to see how beautiful this country is. but sad to say that there are people who never think of this because they are benifiting for what they call mining. we should realize that time will come na mauubos ang mga minerals na nakukuha sa mga mining sites na yan and ano gagawin ng mga miners? they will look for other places kung saan sila ulit makakakuha ng minerals at makikinabang ang mga tagadoon ng 60 or ilang yaers lang then lilipat na naman pag naubos mga minerals and time will come na mawawalan ng ganda ang pilipinas.ang hirap kase satin hindi tayo nakokontento sa mga meron tayo.bakit di nalang natin pagsumikapan na mapaganda pa ang bansa natin hindi yung hangad tayo ng hangad ng industrialized na bansa. i think its now are time to keep the beauty of what we have.

its not bad to “No to mining in Palawan, But I have to re-phrase your title, “NO TO IRRESPONSIBLE MINING IN PALAWAN”… natural resources are gift to us from God to make us a living and to nurture us. Not all mining destroys the environment they change things.

Sabi niyo po responsible mining ang prinopromote niyo pero…what about 8-10 years from now? Do you think the plants that you planted will grow that fast. What kind of plant is that? With magic bean? No, while those plants are in the stage of growing…flashfloods could take place and those plants, still feeble and vulnerable from strong waves that’ll hit them, will also be uprooted.

For the mining sites that you’ve mined, do you have the newest technology that will restore those areas especially the surroundings? What about the near inhabitants there? Where will you put them? Beside your mining site and factories where chemicals are emitted? Oh mhy! You’re killing people. You always say that there are appropriate mining sites. I’ve read one book saying that as long sa an area has a reasonable deposit of minerals could be mined. Isn’t it basically the reason why you went to Palawan and mined there?

You always say it’s responsible. What about the future of Palawan? You cut trees and scrape mountains. It will take centuries before that could recover from such exploitation. While the healing process takes place, a lot of disaster could happen. That’s so sad, we only look for the short-term happiness that we could get through mining. What about its diverse effect of the environment? You always say that it’s not only mining which contributes to the depreciation of Palawan…That’s precisely the point! It’s not the only reason, why add more? Why burden Palawan? Why burden me? If there’s no really bad effects, why is it that a young person like me is very worried of the things that could happen 10 or 15 years from now. Yes, I might not know everything about mining but that’s it. I don’t know yet everything but it’s already frightening me.

How can you assure the youth that they will still see the beautiful landscapes in Palawan if you’re trying to rape it already? Then, let me ask you, how will you stand calling Palawan the Last Frontier while you’re degrading it, while you are starting to detoriorate it?

Many of you could rebut that nature can restore its health by time. But if there are human interventions, how will they manage to restore their stable condition. It’s the nature, it can live by itself but you should let it do its business. Don’t overestimate nature, she is never that strong enough to bear all the dirts, mine tailings that you throw to her. She gets tired as much as you get tired to your work. Yes, you mine and earn for a living…

We cannot sacrifice Palawan’s biodiversity just because it rich ecosystem is income-generating. We can still prosper without mining IN PALAWAN.

I understand that it’s unpractical to just pull out your investments and efforts that you’ve given already so to give in to our fellowmen. Suppose you remain working there. Afterwards, what happen? If we won’t stop mining in Palawan, it will just repeat the disasters that happened to other places. Please, don’t include Palawan to your business.

It doesn’t mean that there are no bad effects that are sensible right now. I bet, 20 years from now, if minings are not banned especially if it will not be controlled…Palawan will never recover. Palawan is for everyone.

Take into consideration the animals, the marine life that you kill or perhaps you disturb. Will they enjoy using the technology produced by mining industry? Where will you put them? In zoos? Then what? Just let them do that ‘survival of the fittest’ mode? BULLSH*T! Then why did you ever take them away from wilderness? It’s their natural home. You all said that nature is there to support our living. But humans, although they are the most intelligible living beings that ever existed in Earth, are not the only organisms living in this world. For God’s sake, don’t destroy His creation. Don’t you ever offend God for saying that we attain better living by inventing and innovating technology. Before humans decided to utilize the resources given by God to us, we were able to live in the most simple way with happiness and long life!

You may say that it will violate the very potential of persons. That is, to actualize their capacities. We can become better without having to exploit to much of the natural resources. Still, we are greatly drowning in the luxuries presented by this fancy advancements.

There are a lot of reasons for me to support banning mining in Palawan.

You see, the real problem is not the mining that was happening 30 years ago but the rising mining companies applying to mine the minerals in Palawan. We should stop it unless we agree that sooner or later, agriculture and tourism industry that are the predominant activity in Palawan will decline. You always say that anti-mining in Palawan people are all narrow-minded. Gosh, we are not. We understand your side. This is not a debate or anything. This is our future. I know I can’t really convince you to accept my argument but please, don’t ignore the possible damage that mining will incur to our dear Palawan.

Not everyone benefits in incentives offered by mining such as free education for its employees and other medical provision but everyone could profit by taking care of nature. Through that, you can establish many forms of livelihood.

You also mentioned that mining saves our starving and almost dying community. Whoah, you’ve just said we are different from each other but now you’re including everyone by saying ‘our’. Besides, mining is neither the only way to save our community nor is it the most feasible solution.

Wake up! We accommodate partnerships with foreign countries since we don’t have enough funds to utilize our own resources. But it doesn’t mean that we will just be open forever. Hey, don’t suffer from being in excess. Too much is not good. What is more, those foreign countries, even though I’m not discriminating, have vested interests. Do you think they will go up here just to have a fair mutual assistance? They care before anything else to their country. I hope we also do and that we will be united so we could be more concrete and not scattered.

You asked us if there are news reported where miners got into accidents because of mining. The answer is we don’t know. But, is it the reason why we would not stop mining in Palawan? Will we wait for the time were lives would be killed because of it? Gosh, no matter how we defend that they wear the necessary gears to protect themselves from possible accidents, you wouldn’t really know it unless the symptoms appear already. Which is, as far as I know, appearing years and years after they inflicted such diseases or illnesses and wherein, it is difficult to find remedy. Gonna wait for that?

It’s okay to mine…but, please, don’t use your knowledge, your wide scope of knowledge to fool us just because we don’t know everything. Why not try to explain it to us in simpler terms?

We should be united! Why are we called Filipinos then if we don’t live as Filipinos in reality?

@MS ESGUERRA, i think you are very misinformed regarding this issue. Regarding also sa sinasabi nyong renewable up to 50 years na mining permit, IT SHOULD NOT BE EXCEEDING UP TO 25 YEARS KUNG RENEWAL LANG (PLS REFER TO DAO96-40).
(if you’re not convinced yet, read DAO96-40 and FMRDP GUIDELINES). Yung sinusuportahan mo na anti mining against magnetite sand sa La Union saka sa Cagayan, MGA ILLEGAL SMALL SCALE MINERS ANG NAGMIMINA SA MGA LUGAR NA YAN DAHIL PINAGBAWAL YAN NG DENR (REFER TO DAO96-40) DUE TO COASTAL EROSION.

For all anti mining, please wag po kayo magspeculate ng walang basis, support your claim first by posting pictures, links, pdf documents, NOT HEARSAYS!

I am not from Palawan but I am from the Philippines ( a Filipino) wherein Palawan is located. NO TO MINING IN PALAWAN. Last frontier na to. Kapag nasira ba to may SUPER LAST FRONTIER pa kaya? ( Just an insigh from an ordinary forestry student from UP Los Banos)

When I heard Ms. Gina Lopez discussed all about mining in our breakfast meeting this morning everything has changed. I felt more proud of our country. Our country is stunning, gorgeous and overly blessed with wonderful natural resources. Then I felt sobrang panghihinayang for all the losses due to mining.
God really loves us so much for giving us not just trees to bear fruits,to give us shelter, to protect us from so many rains; not just rocks to hold the trees, but He also added minerals so that rocks can do its job precisely. Sayang! There could have been no Campostela Valley incident or Sendong….
Thank you Ms. Gina for being an eye opener to us and for your “craziness” in our environment. I will do my own little best way to help you.

start by not patronizing products that have something to do with mining. see how well you can live with that. you should go against illegal mining and not mining in general. why not check the “real’ agenda of abs cbn concerning it’s campaign….. it’s all about MONEY. gina lopez can talk all she wants because she has “never” experienced what we in the lower class have experienced…

Together with our co-legionaries from Manila, we were in Bataraza, Palawan from May 18-28, 2012 for evangelization mission. The place was very serene, clean, beautiful and free from pollution. Our co-legionaries in Rio Tuba invited us to visit their place…it was a long trip from Bataraza Poblacion…green mountains and well paved cemented highway. When we reached Rio Tuba, to our dismay “sobrang alikabok”!!! Yes, the place was very promising for a better life… there were movements of a highly industrialized Rio Tuba because of the nickel mining. We stayed there from 11am – 2pm. While we were on our way back to Bataraza Poblacion we noticed that all of us had sparkles/glitters in our skin… an indication that the air or environment is not good for human to endure…in other words polluted air with nickel is up in Rio Tuba. If the nickel mining will continue to operate in Rio Tuba the destruction in the near future would be horrible both for mother nature and the people… Let us not wait for people to experience skin cancer and other catastrophic illnesses that may affect them. The destruction of Rio Tuba is on its way if we dont stop the nickel mining!!! Develop instead Rio Tuba as a fishing and trading port in southern Palawan. God bless Rio Tuba, Bataraza!!!

    Theological Assertion:
The original plan of God on His creation is for man to worship Him. In the account of creation in the book of Genesis, before He created man, He created first all the needs of man: light and darkness on day one, atmosphere on day two, vegetation on day three, solar system for having literal period of time on day four, birds and fish on day five, animals on day six and lastly man (Gen.1:1-31;2:1). The purpose of creation is to sustain the needs of man (Gen.2:8-9). God gave man a volitional kind of mind for him to have a fellowship with God with his freewill (Gen.1:27). God also created man as a rational being (2:20).God also entrust His creation to man.
Because man is a volitional being therefore he can choose right or wrong, man has the ability to disobey God’s law (Gen.3). And the punishment of God for that is to curse the land for him to work hard for it (3:17-19). Because of the grievousness, unsatisfactory and selfishness of man he always disobey God (3:1-13) and the result of this is always a punishment (3:14-19).
    Conclusion:
It is not on what are we going to choose, weather we choose yes or no to mining it depends on us, God gave us the freedom to choose at the very beginning of His creation but freedom to choose comes greater consequences. Maybe Mining is very good in sustaining jobs that will generates financial supports specially to the countries deposits in world bank that will contribute a lot specially in the economics status of the countries, but the question is, after this what is next? After we fulfill our grievous desires what’s the real effects in the near future? Do not distort the original plan of God

    NO TO MINING IN PALAWAN
What is mining? Is it good for environment or not? It helps people or not? This is the first question I’ve decided discusses.
If you look at on dictionary mining means “is a skill that allows players to extract ores, gems, rune essence and other resources from rocks in mines throughout runescape. It only means that there’s no mining at all without the concern of human. The origin of mining began when human discovered some essential nature that can help out human’s need. The problem is that some people benefits but other people suffered.
Now Palawan was subject for mining, pro-mining considered mining as way of discovering Palawan and of course it would help the mining industry where most things we use and even things that surround us are product of mining, but millions of Pilipino participated and supported “no to mining in Palawan” why? Because they love nature and they were also concerned about the dagger of it that soon people will suffer. Mining processes creates a potential negative impact on the environment both during the mining operations and for years after the mine is closed. This impact has led to most of the world’s nations adopting regulations to moderate the negative effects of mining operations. Safety has long been a concern as well, though modern practices have improved safety in mines significantly. Let’s try to open an issue about this question, what did the Bible says regarding this topic? If we look back to the account of creation the Bible clearly says that God was pleased when he saw what he created, does it mean that God is angry when human destroying nature? As a Nature Lover I absolutely stand to no mining in Palawan even in some other places that damages the beauty of nature.
The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.(Gen.2:15). Very clear, God commanded man to keep and take care of what he created that pleased his eye. Take care not devastate or destroy, nature is our life and from nature there is life too. Now don’t we need mining anymore? Of course not were now living in a modern time which most of our needs are from the product of mining. I want to end it up here with my short conclusion; God gave us will and ability to think and decide to choose what is right and wrong, which is appropriate and which is not, which is valuable and which worthless. Lets help nature let’s consider mining too.

    http://www.slideshare.net/no2mininginpalawan/coral-bay-update-on-the-palawan-hpal-project

    @ALL ANTI MINING

yung mga advocate groups na anti mining kaya ba nilang tapatan ang ginagawa ng LARGE SCALE MINING COMPANIES na social development programs gaya ng pagpapatayo ng TULAY, KALSADA, HOSPITAL, SCHOOLS, PABAHAY, RECREATIONAL AREAS, LIVELIHOOD PROGRAMS SA MGA COMMUNITIES KAPAG NAGAWA NILANG PAALISIN ANG MGA LARGE SCALE MINING COMPANIES?

    Just want to share something…

    Job 28:1-11

28:1 “Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold that they refine. Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the ore. Man puts an end to darkness and searches out to the farthest limit the ore in gloom and deep darkness. He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives; they are forgotten by travelers; they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro. As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold. “That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it. The proud beasts have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it. “Man puts his hand to the flinty rock and overturns mountains by the roots. He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing. He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light.

    Deuteronomy 8:7-9

For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
