3 Useful Things You Need in Your Backpack

Was there a time when asked yourself why the other traveler has a bigger backpack than yours? Or worse, you are that traveler? I understand if you are hiking the alps where you need to carry a heavy overhead backpack. But if you are just out for 3days or a week then maybe these products would make your load easier.

I use these during my 100 days around the Philippines and I want to share it with you.

1. Dry Bag.

Since the world is 70% water, more often than not, you get wet when traveling. Worse, your stuff, especially gadgets gets wet and becomes useless. Imagine that iPhone or DSLR camera gets drenched in the rain or during the island-hopping trip. Why not use a dry bag. I have 2- one medium-sized drybag for my laptop and a XL for all the things I have- clothes, gadgets, toiletries, etc. Also, in case of your boat capsized, you can use your bag to as a life-saver because dry bags float.

Dry bag- 100% made of nylon, PVC coating inside

Once I used this as a ‘salbabida’ (lifesaver) in Iligan (check the last photo).

Keep yourself safe and your stuff dry.

I bought the two for less than Php500 (US$12) at Conquer Outdoor Shop in Robinsons Forum (Boni). I also saw from Sandugo in Robinsons Galleria, Market! Market! and Trinoma.

2. Microfiber Towel.

Gone are the days of bringing overhead backpacks, traveling light is in. Why bring a big beach towel if you can lessen your load to as small as the handkerchief? I actually weighed them: Towel- 600grams. Towelite- 75grams. I saw a bigger microfiber towel which will be helpful for girls so they can cover their entire body. Me? I’m contended with mine- as big as a face towel.

Towel and Towelite compared

This dries faster too compared to a regular towel. It’s still towel- just lighter.

I also bought this at Conquer Outdoor shop in Robinsons Forum for less than Php250. I also saw from Sandugo in Robinsons Galleria, Market! Market! and Trinoma.

3. Sarong.

A sarong has hundreds of use. I use it as a body cover while waiting for my clothes to dry, a beach towel, perfect for picnics, table cover, towel when my Towelite is still wet, sun protection, dusk cover and blanket during cold bus rides. Once I have a date where sleeveless shirts aren’t accepted. I asked if the girl can put a sarong around her. Viola! 🙂

Sarong- for all seasons

Do you remember when I used this same sarong on a Beach Date in Pagudpud?

I bought mine from Davao for only Php150. I also saw some from Zamboanga Barter Trade.

Again, if you want to save on space and expenses. You should add dry bag, microfiber towel and sarong in your packing list.

Not yet sold 100%? Remember what The Little Prince said, “He who would travel happily must travel light.”

Hoping you travel happy on your next!

IS THIS HELPFUL? Please share to friends or retweet.

Thanks!

Great stuff James! It reminds me of our trip to Anawangin where I have to wrap my gadgets in plastic bag since I don’t have a dry bag yet….Since my wife already have 2 sarongs, dry bag and towelite are now on my must-buy essentials.

I agree with you James! Dry bag is an all in all ultimate bag for traveling outdoors. I have this dry bag under the brand Hypergear. I goes along with me even if I’m doing spelunking, mountaineering, or simply beach and island hopping!

I really recommend dry bags! bought 1 at http://www.facebook.com/suntrekenterprise

    Enjoy!

That’s a pretty good list. I’ve been thinking of getting a dry bag lately, because it seems like a good investment for those moments you (and your belongings) might just get wet. One thing though, I would substitute a malong instead of a sarong, since a malong can also be used as a cover up, a makeshift changing room, a blanket and also a towel in a pinch. Plus it can be used as a dress!
