Traveling with a Nun?

Posted on December 6, 2011 by journeyingjames 47 Comments

Weeks ago, I received an e-mail that posed a different challenge.

Well, it got me into thinking and after some time, I still can’t decide. That is why I’m asking my readers to answer this for me.

Here’s the e-mail from Sister Joyce:

In  two month’s time, my sister’s coming home from abroad for her annual vacation and she’s asking me to organize an outing just like what we had three years ago; we’re from CamSur so we went to Caramoan where we luckily found a bangkero who is a caretaker of one island so we ditched our plan to stay in (a) tourist inn but rather slept on the sand with the stars as our blanket. my nephews and niece first saw so many  fireflies, swam with starfish, caught fish by the fishpen in the middle of the sea, cook and eat with our bare hands! it was really wonderful…no one wanted to go back to the city…

with this task, i browse the net  and found several solo backpacker’s blogs and started reading those. i found yours challenging more than the others; your skinny dipping article made me chuckle coz i was reminded of …(sister requested not to publish the ff phrase)

me too, i am a lakwatsera by heart; have visited several places in and out of the country. i want to resume my being lakwatsera by summer though i have only 15-20 days off. but i feel “rustic” na, my last travel by myself was two year ago in Masbate so i’m thinking if i can hitch in your travel?

oh by the way, i’m a nun. i can remove my religious garb and leave on my necklace with the cross as a pendant.

want to accept the challenge of travelling with a nun?

That’s it! Can I just say, “no comment”? LOL

If I get 20 YESes from readers, I’ll do it.

Me thinks its kinda exciting! Whatchathink? I go or I don’t?

do i see a robin padilla movie here? hoodlum + action star + nun starrer? get ready for daily prayer routine! hahahaha

seriously, the nuns and priests that i’ve met by far are the coolest bunch! funny, deep thinkers and have amazing venturesome spirits (read: not the stereotyped ones we normally see around). after all, underneath the religious garb is a human being too.

the letter has adventure written all over it. if i were you, i should give it a yes!

I would say “YES” to that. it might be a great experience for both of you. I myself find priests and nuns to be funny, down-to-earth, and easy people.

go! travel with them… so YES is my answer. i used to think that nuns we’re so strict and uptight and i would often get scolded because of any misbehavior. i got to work in 3 different religious institutions and worked closely with nuns. well, yes, some are really strict, but there are really those na ala-whoopi goldberg! hehe! and believe me, they’re so much to be with. so, go and travel with them! yey!

YES! I have two sisters who are former nuns. They are the coolest persons in the world. We have this perception and stereotype about nuns who can’t do this. In fact some of them are well traveled due to their apostolate work. Why not? You might convert later on as “Journeying James, the traveling monk.” hehehe…ayaw mo nun, may tagadasal na sa yo para malayo ka sa disgrasya. Hehe.

I don’t see any logical reason not to accept. In fact this might be one of those life-changing travels you might have. You want to gain friends from different walks of life and learn from them them, don’t you? I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from her. Contrary to what people think, the religious and the clergy are two of those very open-minded and well-experienced people.
