What can your 1-peso buy?
Tweet: “pork barbecue (Php 1 each), puso (Php 3 each) and balbacua soup (free) for dinner at the night market. barato at lami, busog!”
What I like in small city like this is the dirt cheap barbecue stations, journeyingjames-friendly hawker stalls, which they call the Night Market. It’s not the same with CDO’s vibrant Night Café but I’m happy to see the hanging rice or puso and various display of meat ready to be grilled- chicken thigh, pork liver and everything in between.
Looking at the small pork barbecue cubes, I asked,
James: “Pila ini” (How much is this?).
Lady Gaga (not her real name): “Piso” said the tindera.
Whispering, I ask Sir Wendell to make sure if I heard it right,
James (to Sir Wendell): “Piso?” (One peso?).
He asked the girl again,
Sir Wendell: “Pila?”
Lady Gaga (again, not her real name): “Piso isa ka piraso” (One peso per piece)
It was indeed a peso per piece and I was dumb-founded. It was the cheapest barbecue I bought. How I wish Mang Inasal is as budget-friendly as this.
Sir Wendell ordered Php 30.00, what more? When you buy 10 pieces, you get 1 more piece for free. Whatda?!!!! So we get 33 pieces of barbecue for only Php 30.00. Now, where in the world can you buy a barbecue as cheap as that?
Add 6 pieces of puso and a free balbacua soup, that is what you call dinner journeyingjames way.

Php 30 (33 pcs of barbecue) + Php 21 (7 pcs of puso) = Php 51 divided by 2pax = Php 25.50.
Where is Pagadian Night Market?
It is about 50 meters from the city hall. We ate at Aling Nelia’s eatery at P. Urro St. It opens at 5:00pm till about 9:00pm. The Night Market is a strip of barbecue grill stations offering tired locals fast and cheap food choices. Don’t miss this experience when you visit Pagadian City.
Pagadian Adventures is a 6-part series of my off-the-beaten path wanderings in Zamboanga del Sur, particularly in Pagadian City. My heartfelt thanks go to Dr.Wendell of Journeys & Travels for accommodating me in his house thru CouchSurfing.
