I really admire Kakay and Gael’s bravery in charting new routes but our feature this month is chosen because of his “crazy and hardcore” ideas in backpacking! Drum rolls to FLIP! Which until now I do not know the real name.
Name: FLIP NOMAD
How would you describe backpacking in three words
fun, adventure, experience
Years of experience into backpacking?
On and off for 4 years
How did you start traveling/backpacking?
I’ve travelled within Luzon with my family since I was young. My extended family always had this reunion sort of gathering usually in some affordable resorts in Batangas and Laguna. I was always the last kid that will go out of the pool.
I started travelling with friends when I was in high school, usually during the excursion kind of thing. In college, usually because of the school related overnights that needed to be spent outside the city.
The first time I travelled on my own was 9 years ago when I got really frustrated in my first job. I ventured out of the city and went to Puerto Galera on my own.
I ventured out of the country when I reached the age of 25. I traveled with my friends in Singapore and Thailand and on our way home the travel bug bit me and travel became a huge part of my life.
Best experience ever while on the trip?
The whole six months backpacking trip across eight countries last year. What made it great is, I never thought I could do it. It just happened. I trusted my gut feel more than my logic and enjoyed the 6 months. The best experience is realizing that I could achieve whatever I put my mind into.
The worst experience was when my Lola died when I was on the road. I was torned between going home or continuing on. I’ve decided to go home instead to see her for the last time. Travelling the world could always wait. check out my post: http://www.flipnomad.com/2010/01/convince-me-to-go-to-india.html for the whole story.
Fave travel quote(s)?
A lot. Mostly from people that I met on the road and from my own realization.
I like to ask myself though about this question I came up with while I
was on the road:
If I throw out my achievements, my failures, my successes, my relationships, my affiliations, my family and friends, my past, present and future, my material possesions, who am I?
Share your longest backpacking trip?
Longest backpacking trip would be the one I did last year. I travelled for 6 months in Asia. I started in Kuala Lumpur then to Chiang Mai, Mae Sot, Huay Xai, Luang Prabang, Vientianne, Vinh, Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, HCM(transit only) to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Bangkok, Guillin, Kunming, Zhongdian (Shangrila), XiangCheng, Chengdu, Kathmandu, Pokhara, transited to Gorakhpur then to Varanasi, Agra and then last stop in New Delhi then back home to Manila. That’s my exact route 😉
So many things to say about the experiences in those places 🙂 Check out the archive of my blog (http://www.flipnomad.com/p/archive.html)
Any realization/reflection while on the road?
“You can achieve whatever you put your mind and heart into.”
Share 3-5 important things that should be on your backpack?
“Pen, notebook (paper one), and passport”
3 backpacking tips?
1. Just do it!
2. Trust your gut feel
3. “Be there” not “Go there”
Best place you’ve been to in the PH? in other countries?
There’s a lot… in the philippines, i was amazed by the beauty of Coron and the serenity of Sagada… in other countries, definitely India for the cultural experience, you have to be there to experience what most people are saying about India. when you go there, go with an openmind and an open heart… and China for the amazing food and spectacular landscape (Southwest China, near Tibet).
I’ll ask him/her, “what have you been dreaming to see?”
Before this interview ended, Flip told me that, “Travel is more than seeing structures, it’s more than tasting different cuisines, more than buying unique souvenirs, more than the great photographs, more than meeting new friends, more than experiencing a different culture. Travelling/Backpacking is about knowing YOURSELF and the WORLD you live in.”
PS: Travelling is the best way to meet weird and crazy people like me. hehehe
There you go! I have yet to meet Flip but I believe this Nomad will travel the world. Continue traveling and exploring the world. I love your blog: flipnomad.com. If you are on twitter, you can follow Flip at @flipnomad.
